Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming society, and education stands poised to benefit significantly. Educational AI (AIEd) can promote accessible and inclusive learning, tackling systemic barriers and empowering diverse learners. Challenges remain, including bias in AI-enhanced services, transparency in assessment and feedback, and user equity in access to devices, connections, and required languages. This study examines opportunities and challenges associated with AIEd’s role in advancing equitable, effective education, focusing on two key questions: How can AI facilitate personalized learning experiences that accommodate individual learner diversity? How can AI Ed address existing barriers to access, equity, and appropriate assessment in education? To address these questions, the study employs a conceptual framework informed by theories of learning and pedagogical design. Existing knowledge is synthesized and mapped to workings of AI, commonly embraced pedagogical frameworks, and diverse learning contexts. Insights drawn from this analysis can help practitioners in varied educational settings navigate key components for sound, responsible integration of AI technology into teaching and learning (Aliabadi et al., 2023) ; Schiff, 2021.
